Brett Hankison, a former police officer in Louisville, Kentucky, is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday for violating Breonna Taylor's civil rights. Taylor was killed in her home during a botched drug raid in March 2020.
Hankison was convicted of one count of civil rights violation after he fired blindly into Taylor's apartment. His shots did not injure anyone. The Department of Justice has recommended a sentence of one day in prison, according to a memorandum filed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred during a raid when three officers discharged dozens of rounds after Taylor's boyfriend fired a single shot, hitting one of the officers. Prosecutors stated that Hankison fired 10 rounds through the sliding glass door and window of Taylor's apartment, which were covered with blinds and curtains. Some of the bullets entered a neighboring apartment where three individuals were present at the time.
Despite the gunfire, none of the rounds struck any individuals. The case has drawn significant attention and has been part of broader discussions about police conduct and accountability.
