VANCOUVER — Kerry Sim, the woman convicted of drowning Victoria teenager Reena Virk 28 years ago, has had her day parole revoked. The Parole Board of Canada made this decision after determining that Sim breached her conditions by failing to abstain from drugs.
At 42 years old, Sim, who was known as Kelly Ellard during her trial, initially denied the test results that indicated the presence of methamphetamine in her system. She claimed the result was a false positive caused by her medication. However, the board concluded that Sim continues to exhibit an anti-social and delinquent value system, showing an unwillingness to accept responsibility for her past actions. This behavior places her at a high risk for future delinquent conduct.
Sim is a single parent of two children. The board noted that she has faced emotional struggles, particularly due to one child's behavioral issues. Additionally, she expressed safety concerns following the airing of a TV miniseries that depicted Virk's murder.
Reena Virk, just 14 years old at the time of her death, was brutally attacked by a group of teenagers under the Craigflower Bridge. Sim, then 15, played a pivotal role in the assault, which culminated in her drowning Virk in the nearby Gorge waterway. The case attracted significant media attention, with the judge describing Virk as a defenseless victim of a prolonged and brutal attack.
