RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Multiple people reported to KOLO this morning that they received a text scam pretending to be the Department of Motor Vehicles. Beware, this is a scam.

The Department of Motor Vehicles wont text you about outstanding issues that need to be dealt with.

Many of these texts come from European numbers and that’s a dead giveaway the text is a scam.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says that there are a few ways to protect yourself against these spams.

- Do not click on links from numbers you don’t recognize

- Check traffic tickets on your own, on the specific state’s traffic websites

- Report text scams to (7726) SPAM if you have a United States phone provider

- Block and report the phone number

- Never give personal information out over text or phone, most entities
