COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is alerting the public to a wave of scam text messages falsely claiming to be from the agency.
A few weeks ago the fake texts were about "unpaid tolls." Now, SCDMV says they are about "ticket violations."
The fraudulent messages are designed to trick recipients into handing over personal or financial information by threatening license suspension or legal action over alleged unpaid traffic violations.
Officials stress that these messages are not legitimate and urge residents to remain cautious.
SCDMV says it does not send texts to collect on unpaid tickets or tolls, and says its only legitimate webpage is www.SCDMVOnline.com . "Don't let a fake text redirect you or your money elsewhere."
