BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - As questions remain in two police-involved situations, including the officer-involved shooting of Jabari Peoples in Homewood and the restraint of Phillip Reeder in Irondale, WBRC is digging deeper into what rights the public has when it comes to seeing police body camera footage in Alabama.
In both of these cases, the body cam video has not been released to the public. The Peoples’ family still has not viewed the footage, and the Reeder family saw it for the first time in 11 months last week.
Attorney Evans Bailey, General Counsel for the Alabama Press Association, says state law is clear: body camera footage is not considered public record.
