ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Two of the country’s largest freight railroads may be joining forces.

Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific are in talks about a possible merger , the announcement coming Thursday during an earnings report.

It’s a possible move that could reshape how goods move across the country.

Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific say they’re in advanced talks about combining the two companies, but nothing is official yet.

“Fundamentally, drive the efficiency, drive the productivity and drive that customer focus, drive the capability to deliver and sell and be able to move products at a high level for our customers in an efficient manner,” said Jim Vena, Union Pacific CEO, at the second quarter 2025 earnings report.

Combined, the two rail giants cover coast-to-coast territory.
