Yesterday morning, attention at the Chaves County 4-H and FFA Fair at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds turned to heifers and steers.
Despite some categories having few contestants, judge Ty Gillespie praised the entries and repeatedly commented on how hard it was to make decisions in the events.
“Give these kids a round of applause for a job well done,” he told the spectators.
Inside Hobson Hall, Joy and Jerry Wagner were admiring the works in the arts and crafts exhibit. Joy said they were at the fair to support their grandkids who were competing in the livestock competitions. One of those grandchildren, Jake Wagner, won grand champion in the blackface lamb competition.
“We know so many of the little kids,” Joy said, “I guess they are not little any more.”
