A 9-year-old child died on Thursday evening at The Boardwalk, a water park attraction within Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The incident was confirmed by John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts.
Lawn stated that lifeguards noticed the child in distress and immediately initiated rescue efforts. These efforts were supported by on-site first responders and medical personnel. Despite their attempts, the child was transported to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
"Our hearts break for this child and the child's family," Lawn said in a statement. He extended his deepest condolences but did not disclose the child's identity or any personal details to respect the family's privacy.
The Boardwalk features 16 water attractions, including the "Whitecap Racer," a mat racing slide, and "The Shore," a wave pool with a capacity of 378,000 gallons. Lawn emphasized that the safety of guests is the park's highest priority.
"To every family who visits Hersheypark, please know this: your safety and well-being drive every decision we make," he said.
An internal review will be conducted, and the park will cooperate fully with authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's death. Lawn noted that the investigation is ongoing and that updates will be provided as appropriate.
He also requested privacy for the family and team members affected by the tragedy, stating, "As we grieve alongside our community, we will continue to work to support everyone involved." The park aims to honor the memory of the young guest by maintaining a focus on safety.
