President Donald Trump expressed his approval of actress Sydney Sweeney after learning she is a registered Republican. This revelation comes as Sweeney faces backlash for her recent American Eagle jeans advertisement.
During a press event on Sunday in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump reacted positively when a reporter informed him of Sweeney's political affiliation. "Oh, now I love her ad," he said. He added, "You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That's one I wouldn't have known but I'm glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic."
Sweeney, known for her roles in "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus," has been registered with the Republican Party in Florida since June 2024, according to public voter records. Her political stance has come to light as she faces criticism from some left-wing commentators who have labeled her American Eagle campaign as offensive. Critics have drawn comparisons between the ad's tagline, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," and historical eugenics propaganda.
In the promotional video, Sweeney discusses how genes are inherited from parents, before humorously stating, "my jeans are blue." The ad features her crossing out the word "genes" on a billboard and replacing it with "jeans," which has sparked a heated debate on social media regarding beauty standards and race.
American Eagle has defended the campaign amid the backlash. Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, described the criticism as "cancel culture run amok." Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, criticizing the left's reaction. "My political advice to the Democrats is: continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive that they’re a Nazi," he said during a podcast.
As the controversy continues, Sweeney has not publicly commented on the reactions to her advertisement.
