In April, San Diego State finished football camp in a unique way. Instead of holding a traditional scrimmage, they had the players compete in a series of skills challenges like obstacle courses and even dodgeball. Not everyone in the fan base was enamored with the format.
But, in the transfer portal era, it turned out to be a really good idea for continuity and keeping the roster together.
“The spring portal window was open and guys were being tampered with and poached with and talked to and have specifically told me, because of the day that they got to have and the connection that they felt that day with our community and with their team, like, why would I give this up and go be a mercenary somewhere else?” says head coach Sean Lewis. “So, that was a great day.”
