GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Walmart stabbing suspect Bradford James Gille has been referred for mental competency evaluation.

According to Gille’s case file, he has been ordered by the court to undergo evaluation ahead of his impending trial.

A prison competency evaluation, also known as a competency to stand trial evaluation, assesses whether a defendant in a criminal case is mentally capable of understanding the legal proceedings and assisting in their own defense.

Gille is currently facing 12 charges related to the July 12 stabbing incident that left 11 people seriously injured. Those victims have all since received extensive treatment, with most being released or transferred to other hospitals .

Gille’s bond currently sits at $1 million.
