DANVILLE, Va. — A city councilman in southern Virginia is recovering in the hospital after he was attacked and set on fire. Police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for the attack.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. in the city of Danville. According to investigators, officers were sent to the offices of Showcase Magazine in the 700 block of main street after witnesses reported a man had been set on fire.

Once on scene, the man was airlifted to a regional medical facility for treatment, but police say the full extent of his injuries is not known at this time. Witnesses told officers the suspect, identified as Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, approached Lee Vogler, who works at the magazine and also serves as a Danville city councilman, and doused him with a flammable liquid.
