The State Fair of Texas is sending a piece of history to Washington, D.C., for a year.

Big Tex's size-96 cowboy boots are leaving Texas for the second time in history and will be featured in a national exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the State Fair said.

The yearlong exhibition is the first dedicated to artists' contributions to American state fairs and will feature more than 240 works of art, according to the Smithsonian .

State Fairs: Growing American Craft opens Aug. 22 at the Renwick Gallery and will run through Sept. 7, 2026.

The boots began their cross-country journey on July 28 and are scheduled to arrive
