On Thursday, two Alabama lawmakers discussed their proposed legislation that would extend the death penalty to those convicted of sexual assault on children.
State Senator April Weaver and State Rep. Matt Simpson talked about their legislation, which would allow prosecutors to go for the death penalty for those convicted of raping or sodomizing children who are under 12-years old.
Under a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the death penalty is currently applicable only in cases involving the loss of life, such as murder, robbery in which an individual is killed, and others, according to Simpson and Weaver.
The lawmakers say Florida and Tennessee have recently passed similar laws and they feel confident that passing their version of the law in Alabama will force the court to reconsider its prece
