PORTLAND, Ore. — The city of Portland will make changes where necessary in order to comply with President Donald Trump's executive orders targeting diversity, equity and inclusion, Mayor Keith Wilson announced Thursday in a letter to the city's community partners.

Wilson said he's signed an executive order directing city officials to ensure that their policies do not violate federal anti-discrimination laws "as likely to be interpreted by the current federal judiciary."

It's not entirely clear what this will mean, in practice. Through executive action, the U.S. president can direct federal agencies to interpret laws in certain ways — such as the federal anti-discrimination laws Wilson mentioned — however the federal judiciary has in some cases determined that Trump's executive orders
