The Yankees and Rays swung an in-game trade that will send the speedy José Caballero to the opposite dugout, a source told MLB.com's Adam Berry on Thursday. The clubs have not confirmed the move, though Caballero was seen on the broadcast hugging his teammates. The Rays will receive Triple-A outfielder Everson Pereira in return, per a source.

After a long and often-painful journey to the Majors , Caballero debuted for the Mariners in 2023 and produced 2.5 Wins Above Replacement in only 104 games. That attracted the attention of the Rays, who needed an Opening Day option at shortstop heading into last season.
