Reinforcing reading at home is more important than ever once the school year starts.

Javier Rodriguez with the Fort Worth Public Library said this is the perfect time for parents to pay close attention to their students' comprehension, especially when it comes to kids in first grade and beyond.

"You can ask your kids to raise one hand and ask them to lower one finger for each word they don't understand," Rodriguez said. "If you see that all five fingers are down or that they really can't repeat back to you what their learned, then maybe the book is too advanced. This could also indicate that your student might need to work on retention and comprehension."
