WASHINGTON — Five years after two Virginia men reportedly orchestrated a series of robocalls in an attempt to suppress predominantly Black voters in Michigan, the pair pleaded no contest to charges in court.

According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, 59-year-old John Burkman from Arlington and 27-year-old Jacob Wohl from Fairfax pleaded no contest on Friday to multiple charges, including bribing or intimidating voters in Michigan.

While living in Virginia, the charges stem from the pair targeting predominantly Black voters in Detroit ahead of the 2020 election. Prosecutors say Burkman and Wohl worked to discourage people from voting in the general election by creating and funding a robocall targeting specific and multiple urban areas across the country, including Detroit.
