WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders are one step closer to returning to the District after the D.C. Council approved the first of two votes on a proposed stadium redevelopment deal. While the initial approval has prompted celebrations among fans and city leaders, some residents are raising concerns about the project’s long-term impacts.

In a 9 to 3 vote on Friday, councilmembers moved the deal forward, with a final vote expected in September.

“We are proud of the hard work we have done,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser, a longtime supporter of bringing the Commanders back to the city.

James Gaston III, a lifelong Commanders fan, shared in the excitement:

“The future looks bright ... I could not be more excited. The project looks very promising,” Gaston said.
