CARMEL- Despite the oppressive heat and humidity some two dozen young men and women have been training at all hours of the day and evening this summer in conjunction with the Putnam Sheriff’s Department Cadet program.

Sheriff Kevin McConville explained Tuesday the six-month training program was about “skill, values, leadership, fun, being trustworthy, doing the right thing while being loyal, helpful and kind to each other. When graduating, these outstanding teenagers will have met the challenge making us all proud.”

The Cadet program was formed as a chartered Law Enforcement Explorer program in 1967 by the late Sheriff Raynor Weizenecker. Cadets perform various community service details from Cold Spring to Carmel, including assisting deputies on patrol and performing traffic and patrol
