The U.S. military is preparing for the possible activation of a portion of the DC National Guard to be deployed to Washington, D.C., according to a U.S. official. It’s unclear exactly how many Guardsmen might be activated, as a decision has not yet been made. There are 2,700 personnel in the D.C. National Guard. The expectation is that if guardsmen are activated, it would be in a support role to local authorities. The D.C. National Guard is unique in that, unlike other National Guards, it is not under the control of a governor or, in this case, the mayor of D.C., but the president. That authority has been delegated to the defense secretary and the secretary of the Army. -ABC News’ Luis Martinez
