MICHIGAN CITY — The escalating gun violence in the city is out of control and cannot be normalized, Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said in the wake of news that a 25-year-old LaPorte man was shot early Sunday outside a bar/restaurant near the city's popular lakefront park and zoo.
"These are not accidents," she said in a prepared statement. "These are conflicts, retaliations, and reckless decisions - often involving young adults with access to firearms."
"As recently as early this morning, we lost another young life," she said Sunday. "Another mother is grieving. Another family shattered. And again, I find myself asking: how many more young people must we bury before we wake up as a community?"
