BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced plans to purchase up to $230 million in domestic food products, including $50 million in dry beans, to support nutrition assistance programs across the country.

North Dakota is expected to see a significant benefit from the purchase. According to the USDA’s 2025 Dry Bean Planting Report, the state leads the nation in dry bean production, accounting for approximately 43% of total U.S. acreage with about 630,000 acres planted.

The purchase is designed to strengthen local food systems by providing additional market support for producers, stabilizing prices and boosting rural economies. The dry beans will be distributed to food banks and other organizations serving communities in need
