JUNEAU — Gov. Mike Dunleavy lashed out at the Alaska Legislature over the weekend after lawmakers voted to override his veto of $50 million in education funding, ending months of tension between the governor and the legislative majority but deepening the rift over how to fix Alaska’s troubled public education system.
During a press conference following Saturday’s brief special session, Dunleavy painted a picture of a state government split between two fundamentally different philosophies: one focused on spending money, and the other, his, on enacting structural reforms.
“There’s two divergent views on how to fix the problem in Alaska,” Dunleavy said. “From my perspective — and if you follow the Legislature — money seems to be the go-to default. We believe it’s policy that fixes problems.
