WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn Jr. spoke at 2 p.m. Monday about five homicides that occurred over the weekend . The briefing was held outside the Public Safety Center at 725 North Cherry Street.

On Friday evening, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 4800 block of Berl Street . Jaquavion Lewis, a 16-year-old, was found suffering from gunshot wounds and later died. Investigators said the teen allegedly attempted to commit a robbery during a firearm sale. One of the involved parties reportedly acted in self-defense.

Police said following consultation with Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill, it was determined the incident appeared to be a case of self-defense. No charges will be filed at this time.
