GREENSBORO, N.C. — After more than two decades behind bars, two of the remaining members of the Winston-Salem 5 are set to walk free.
On Friday night, attorneys for Rayshawn Banner and Nathaniel Cauthen shared that Judge Robert Broadie had overturned their convictions and dismissed the charges with prejudice in the 2002 murder of 61-year-old Nathaniel Jones, the grandfather of NBA star Chris Paul.
"He overturned the conviction, Rayshawn, and he dismissed the charges with prejudice, which is very, very huge," attorney Christine Mumma told Banner during an emotional call.
The decision follows a January 2025 evidentiary hearing where attorneys presented new DNA evidence, a recantation from key witness Jessica Black, and evidence that Banner and Cauthen’s confessions — made when they were
