WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — On Friday, convictions were overturned and charges were dismissed for the "Winston-Salem Five," a group of teen boys who were convicted in the 2002 murder of Nathaniel Jones — the grandfather of NBA star Chris Paul, according to Christine Mumma, the attorney for two of the men convicted.
Jones was found beaten to death in the carport of his Winston-Salem home in November 2002, one day after a then-17-year-old Paul committed to play basketball at Wake Forest University.
Over the course of their investigation, Winston-Salem police arrested five teens in connection with Jones' murder. Brothers Nathaniel Cauthen and Rayshawn Banner , who were 15 and 14 years old at the time of the killing, were sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder.
