WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – A political standoff that started in Texas is now going national.

Democratic lawmakers are fighting a Republican redistricting plan that could change the balance of power for the entire country.

The Texas State House is supposed to be voting on new redistricting maps, but dozens of Texas Democrats left the state, meaning there aren't enough lawmakers present to move forward.

At the center of this escalating fight are the maps of Texas’ electoral districts.

Texas Republicans are trying to redraw the lines to give themselves five more Republican leaning congressional seats which would give their party and President Donald Trump an important advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.
