Prosecutors say 51-year-old Joseph Nutgrass was found guilty after a three-day jury trial in Lincoln County.

Nutgrass was charged in the March 2024 death of 45-year-old Ricky Patterson, who died from asphyxiation after an altercation at Nutgrass’ home.

Investigators say Nutgrass’ account of what happened was inconsistent with the evidence, and that text messages showed he told people he might have to kill Patterson.

The jury recommended a 25-year prison sentence.
