NORTH CAROLINA, USA — A Moore County man was impaired while operating a boat that struck and killed a 10-year-old girl swimming in Shearon Harris Lake on Saturday, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and a report by WNCN.

The incident happened just before 4:35 p.m. near the Cross Point Access Area in the southern portion of the lake. Authorities said Quinten Gregory Kight, 40, of Vass, was driving a Tige Wake boat while “under the influence of an impairing substance” and pulling an inner tube when the vessel went through a group of three swimmers.

Brooklyn Mae Carroll, 10, was killed, and a woman was severely injured. The woman was airlifted from the scene, and her left leg was amputated above the knee, according to Sgt. Claude Smith with the N.C. Wildlife Com
