HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The City and County of Honolulu hosted the 84th Annual Na Hula Festival Sunday.

The free event took place at Kapiolani Park and is Hawaii’s longest-running, non-competitive hula event.

The festival started in 1940 when the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation wanted to showcase its students.

“I’ve been doing this for about, actually like 10 years, and when it first started, it was a hōʻike for the different parks’ hula classes around the island,” said culture and art specialist Samantha Sun.

The festival included performances from the Royal Hawaiian Band, Halau Na Pua Hala Kunou i ke Kai, Puanani Alama Hula Studio, Halau Hula o Pua Aala Hone, and Hula Hui o Kapunahala.
