GARY — The Gary Police Department released its mid-year public safety report Monday, which shows many types of violent crime, including homicides, are happening at a clip far lower than a year ago.
Between January and June, nine people were killed in homicides, the department said, a 55% decrease compared to 20 during the same period in 2024. Additionally, 88% of the homicides have resulted in charges filed, more than 30 percentage points higher than the national average.
Nonfatal shootings also declined in the first half of the year, with 55 compared to 75 in the first half of 2024.
Gary Mayor Eddie Melton attributed the positive results to investments in proactive policing and leadership by Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon.
