MONROE, N.C. (WJZY) -- A Monroe police officer is back on the job Monday after being seriously injured in the line of duty earlier this summer. Her return is being met with celebration, support, and heartfelt thanks from fellow officers and community members.
The officer was shot during a dangerous chase on May 31, 2025. It started in the early morning hours when authorities spotted a suspicious vehicle on Old Charlotte Highway and tried to pull it over. The driver, identified as Joshua Sikes, 18, sped off, leading police on a high-speed pursuit.
After officers used stop sticks to disable the vehicle, Sikes jumped out and opened fire, shooting more than a dozen rounds at police before running into nearby woods. A manhunt followed, ending when Sikes shot at officers again. Law enforcement
