(Gray News) – President Donald Trump is praising American Eagle’s controversial ad for jeans featuring actress Sydney Sweeney.

On Monday, Trump told reporters “I love her ad” and “I think her ad is fantastic” after finding out that Sweeney is a registered Republican.

“You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans … If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic,” Trump said, in part.

The American Eagle ad campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” used a play on words in some videos in which it used the word “genes” instead of “jeans.”

Critics of the ad said that the ad was in poor taste because they believe it alluded to Sweeney having “good genes” because she is white with blonde hair and blue eyes.
