COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Major construction is officially underway at Columbus Airport, where crews have begun a full runway reconstruction project.

The airport held its final round of flights on Monday before construction halted all commercial, military and large aviation operations, according to airport officials.

The project, estimated to cost nearly $24 million and is expected to take up to 100 days to complete.

Airport representatives say a recent geotechnical assessment determined the runway required a complete overhaul.
