KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City, Kansas police say a Shawnee police K9 that was assisting during an overnight barricade/standoff call was stabbed and taken to a vet.

KCKPD says officers responded to the call just east of 10th and Riverview at 3:45 a.m. where someone called 911 after a family member armed with a knife came back to a home following an assault.

Investigators say the suspect barricaded himself, leading to a standoff. Shawnee police sent the K9 to help, and when officers tried to arrest the suspect, he stabbed the K9.

KCKPD says the K9 is expected to fully recover, and the suspect surrendered at 7:30 a.m. and was arrested.

Shawnee police have three police K9s, and a spokesperson says they're grateful Dagger is healing and they appreciate all support and well wishes.
