KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - A Kansas K9 is recovering after being stabbed early Tuesday.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department was dispatched to a home in the 900 block of Riverview around 3:45 a.m. on August 5.

At the home, officers spoke with a person who said a family member had returned after an earlier assault involving a knife. When officers tried to approach the home to talk to the man, he barricaded himself inside.

The Shawnee Police Department brought a K9 officer to the scene, and when officers went inside the home to take the man into custody, the dog was stabbed.

Shawnee police confirmed the dog involved was K9 Dagger, a Belgian Malinois who has been a part of the department since 2023.

Dagger was taken to a local vet and is expected to make a full recovery.
