RICHMOND, Maine — For more than 60 years, a ferry operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) connected the town of Richmond to Swan Island —a scenic spot in the Kennebec River known for its wildlife, hiking trails, and campgrounds.

That ferry stopped running in 2022, leaving visitors to find their own way—by kayak, canoe, or private boat.

Now, new efforts are underway to restore access. A recently passed Maine law created a working group to study public transportation options to Swan Island. The group includes MDIFW officials, advocates, and local town representatives.

While long-term plans are being discussed, a local man has stepped up to fill the gap. Captain Gary Smith launched a small-scale ferry service out of Richmond’s town dock.
