Nearly nine months after being washed out by the November 2024 flood, U.S. Highway 178 (North Road) has reopened to traffic.
"SCDOT is happy to announce the reopening of this vital route for the people of Orangeburg County," S.C. Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said. "We are grateful to have worked with our local, state and federal partners to push these repairs forward. We are thankful for the patience of the community as we worked to reopen the roadway."
The road is a direct connector between Orangeburg and the town of North.
Up to 15 inches of rain fell on parts of Orangeburg County over a 12-hour period on Nov. 7, causing widespread flooding.
