Believed to be the first of its kind in the area at the secondary education level, Mt. Hope High School is offering the sport of powerlifting as a club-level competition this summer under the auspices of the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA).
According to the information provided by Bristol Warren School District Athletic Director Christy Belisle, "powerlifting is a competitive sport in which athletes are given three attempts to perform their best in the disciplines of squat, bench press and deadlift." Athletes are categorized by gender, weight and age.
Belisle called summer break the "ideal" time to introduce the competition as it does not overlap of other sports the school offers during the fall-spring term.
