NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The FBI released a nationwide crime report, looking at data from 2024. The study shows a major improvement in every category they studied, and so has New Mexico.
Between 2023 and 2024, the U.S. saw a nearly 15% drop in homicides and a 5% drop in rapes. Meanwhile, New Mexico's homicide rate fell by 7% while the exact same number of rapes were reported in 2023 and 2024. The study said that overall violent crimes reported in New Mexico fell by 3%.
Researchers looked at over 14 million criminal offences that were reported by 16,000 agencies, including states, counties, cities, and tribal departments. They said their study covers over 95% of the population.
