VEGA, Texas (KFDA) - Ruben heads down I-40 and visits a pie shop in Vega that is happy to share their love of baking with the Panhandle.
Joann Harwell, owner of Mama Jo’s Pies and Sweets, says she started baking many years ago.
“I learned how to bake from my grandmother, but I started this a couple of years ago when I retired. So I just wanted to keep active and do something fun,” said Harwell.
Harwell says she grew up in Abilene and moved to Vega in 1983. She raised three children in the community and says she feels like they had a fine foundation in the community.
“I just love this community. The community helped me raise my kids,” said Harwell.
She started waitressing at Midpoint Cafe when a pie baker quit. Harwell said she had her grandmother’s recipes and she could bake the pies.
