WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A former math teacher at a Waco charter school is suing the school and the mother of a student the teacher claims “physically assaulted and battered” him in October 2023.

Derek Hoggett, 79, of Marlin, is seeking unspecified damages in his lawsuit against Harmony Public Schools and Melissa Bradford, the mother of the female student who reportedly assaulted him in class. The girl is identified in the lawsuit as M.W., a minor.

Bradford declined comment on the lawsuit Friday.

Joseph Ince, principal at Harmony School of Innovation – Waco, 1110 S. Valley Mills Drive in Beverly Hills, also declined comment through a staff member.

Hoggett, who is teaching now at a women’s prison unit in Marlin, also declined comment, saying he would allow the petition to speak for itsel
