EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — A petition is calling for stricter dog control laws after a local family lost its 9-year-old dog when another dog attacked it while on a walk last week.

Amanda Frazier said her son was walking Ameechi, a Maltese, in the Lacosta Lakes neighborhood July 29 when a larger dog broke free from its leash and killed Ameechi.

The other dog, an Anatolian shepherd named Mitra, is a livestock guardian dog at Reed’s Farm on Spruce Avenue.

One of the farm’s founders, who was not identified and later stepped down from the board, was with Mitra when the incident took place.

“The injuries were severe — Ameechi’s organs were exposed, and despite emergency vet efforts, he could not be saved,” Frazier wrote in the petition, which had 341 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.
