An Atlantic County child is one of the state's first human cases of West Nile virus this year, the New Jersey Department of Health said Thursday.
The child, who has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home, reported symptoms the third week of July, state officials said in a news release.
The state did not identify what town the child was from, but the county has reported collecting West Nile-positive mosquito samples this year from Linwood, Somers Point, Northfield, Pleasantville and Ventnor. The county also has conducted regular mosquito ground spraying this summer.
Elsewhere in New Jersey, an adult in Middlesex County also tested positive for West Nile with symptoms reported in the first week of August. Four suspect cases of West Nile are under investigation,
