MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Public health officials on Friday confirmed a person in Dane County was diagnosed with West Nile Virus.

According to Public Health Madison and Dane County (PHMDC), a mosquito that was infected with the virus bit a human.

Data from the state health department shows the person who was bitten had to be hospitalized.

PHMDC said the most cases of West Nile Virus in humans are typically diagnosed in August and September. The best way to avoid getting the virus is to protect yourself from mosquito bites with the following prevention measures:

Use repellent on skin and clothing

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity hours

Avoid direct contact with mosquitoes by placing screens on windows and doors
