It’s strange to think that ’90s alternative heroes 311 originated out of the windswept plains and flat cornfields of Omaha, Nebraska, when the band’s music has a decidedly California flair: fluid, breezy, and sonically bountiful. Named after the police code for indecent exposure, 311 hit the scene in the early ’90s after being signed to Capricorn Records. While their first two albums charted adequately, 311’s self-titled third album broke out, reaching number 12 on the Billboard 200 and cementing their position in the hall of fame of ’90s singles with “Down” and “All Mixed Up.” They kept the momentum going with the next three albums, each of which was certified gold or platinum.
