GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Gaston County officials confirmed their 11th positive rabies case in the county this year.

Around 5:30 p.m., on August 3, Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement received a report that three family dogs came into contact with a raccoon that appeared sick in the 100 block of Jeran Lane in Gastonia.

Officials say there was no human contact with the raccoon. The dogs all had expired rabies vaccinations, but they received booster shots from a veterinarian shortly after the incident.

Animal care specialists impounded the raccoon and sent it to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh the following day for testing.

On August 5, the lab results determined that the raccoon was positive for rabies.
