(WHTM) -- Travelers to some parts of China should take precautions amid an outbreak of chikungunya disease, U.S. health officials said.

What is it?

Chikungunya disease is caused by the chikungunya virus, which spreads to humans through mosquito bites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Infected patients also experience headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling and rash.

The CDC said the outbreak is in the Guangdong Province, mostly in Foshan city.

Why does it matter?

Most people recover from chikungunya disease within a week, the CDC said. However, severe joint pain can last for months or even years.
