CHICAGO (WGN) - Community members are blasting Chicago Public Schools' decision to stop paying for crossing guards near private schools.
S&G Restaurant sits at the six-corner intersection of Lincoln, Southport and Wellington since 1957, and owner Frances Kontos has watched generations of children, ranging from pre-school through eighth grade, walk to Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts.
"As long as I remember, there's always been a crossing guard here," Kontos said.
However, that will no longer be the case when her grandson starts school at Alphonsus is a few weeks.
CPS said it cut 102 crossing guard positions; 33 of them primarily serve private schools like Alphonsus, while the rest of them worked at intersections that ranked lowest in safety risk and had multiple crossing guard
